CHAPTER 01

Our Story

How a gas explosion, a knock on the door, and a suspicious amount of destiny turned the two of us into one.

OCTOBER 7, 2017 · UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, LEGON

Some love stories begin with a romantic glance across a crowded room. Ours began with chaos, fire, and me sprinting for my life. Hi, I'm Julia, the bride. On October 7, 2017, a gas explosion rocked Atomic Junction and sent the whole city scrambling. I was a wide-eyed first-year at the University of Ghana, and I bolted from my hostel at Pentagon with everyone else, fully convinced this was the end. Turns out I was running directly into the beginning.

And me? I (Kingsley, the groom, hi) was a perfectly content second-year gaming on a borrowed laptop, with absolutely no idea that destiny was about to knock on the door. Literally. With its knuckles. Looking for someone else entirely.

The Day Everything Changed

In Julia's words

A gas explosion at Atomic Junction sent shockwaves across Accra. Romantic, I know. While the whole city panicked, I was sprinting out of my hostel at Pentagon (African Union Hall) with half the campus, completely sure the end was near. I thought I was running toward safety. I was actually running toward a boy I hadn't met yet. Plot twist nobody ordered, least of all me.

The Knock That Started It All

In Kingsley's words

Meanwhile, I was minding my own business in my friend Andrew's room, fully locked in on a laptop game, when somebody knocked. I opened the door to a breathless girl asking for Andrew. "He's not here, but you can wait inside." Smoothest line of my life, and somehow it worked. She stepped in. I lost the game. I'd later decide it was worth it.

The Growing Bond

From Strangers to Friends

Turns out the universe wasn't done with us. We were both in NUPSG (National Union of Presbyterian Students Ghana), so we kept bumping into each other at church like the algorithm of fate had us on repeat. Sunday services became study sessions. Study sessions became long conversations about life, dreams, and "wait, you think that too?" We told ourselves we were just friends. We were adorable and we were wrong.

A Divine Twist

When the Past Connected

Then we made a discovery that gave us both chills. Our parents already knew each other. Old friends and colleagues from church, decades back. And the absolute kicker: Kingsley's dad was the MC at Julia's parents' traditional wedding. So technically a Gyekye has been showing up at the bride's family weddings since before we existed. Either destiny, or the longest con in history. We're going with destiny.

More Than Friends

Fourth Year Magic

More Than Friends

In Kingsley's words

By my fourth year at Legon, the "we're just friends" act had completely fallen apart. So I gathered every ounce of courage I owned, rehearsed it way too many times, and asked Julia to be my girlfriend. She said yes, which was a relief because I had no Plan B. Best decision I ever made under pressure. Don't tell her I was nervous, though, she still thinks I was cool about it.

The Golden Years

Growing Together

These were the years we quietly built our whole world. We finished university, survived national service, and chased down our careers, all while squeezing in weekend dates, going to the movies, late-night calls, and the kind of voice notes that go on for nine minutes about absolutely nothing. Somewhere in there we stopped being just a couple and became each other's best friend, hype team, therapist, and number one fan.

A New Chapter

Love Without Borders

In Julia's words

Then I got into a Master's program in the United States, and just like that our love story grew a long-distance subplot and a brutal time difference. I'd be wide awake texting "you up?" to a man fast asleep on another continent. I went on to start my PhD (yes, he's marrying a future doctor, he reminds everyone), and when we finally reunited, it felt like finally exhaling after holding my breath for years.

The Decision

Why Wait for Forever?

Eventually we did the math and realized waiting several more years for a PhD to wrap up before starting our life together was, frankly, ridiculous. We'd already found our person. Why act like we hadn't? So we made the call together: start forever now, write the dissertation later. When you know, you know. And we very much know.

Forever Begins

And so here we are, about to celebrate a love that kicked off with an actual explosion, a knock on the wrong door, and a friendship we both pretended was "just" a friendship for way too long. From Legon to the altar, from strangers to forever. Honestly, the best chapter hasn't even been written yet. Grab a seat, you're invited.

THE LITTLE THINGS

Fun Facts

DID YOU KNOW?

Aside from the fact that Kingsley's dad was the MC at Julia's parents' traditional wedding, Kingsley's mum also made Julia's mum's wedding dress. So our families have basically been planning this since before we could walk. No pressure.

THE FIRST DATE

Our very first date was Afro Classical Nights at the African Regent Hotel, where Kingsley wasted no time initiating Julia into his classical music world. She came for the company and stayed for the strings. No regrets reported since.

WITH GREAT POWER

We are both unapologetically obsessed Spider-Man fans. Every film, every reboot, every “okay but who's the best Spider-Man” debate, we are fully invested. With great power comes great responsibility, and apparently a wedding.

A MATCHED SET

Julia grew up with three brothers. Kingsley grew up with three sisters. Put us together and the family tree finally balances out, as if the universe kept a spreadsheet and really wanted the numbers to be even.

4,000 MILES, ZERO EXCUSES

Long Distance, By the Numbers

Ghana to the United States meant our love story basically lived inside our phones. FaceTime became our living room, the group chat was just the two of us, and Snap was how we proved we were still real. Here's roughly what an ocean between us looked like.

1,000+

FaceTime Calls

Some five minutes long, some until one of us fell asleep mid-sentence (usually him).

900+

Day Snap Streak

Guarded with our lives. The flame emoji was never, ever allowed to die.

Texts & Voice Notes

Good-mornings sent to a sleeping man, and nine-minute voice notes that should've just been calls.

5 hrs

Time Difference

We became fluent in timezone math just to say good night at the right time. Mostly.

* Numbers approximate. The missing-each-other was exact.

She came looking for Andrew. She found forever instead. Apparently the best things in life happen while you're running from an explosion.
— THE UNIVERSE, PROBABLY

From one chaotic October afternoon to this ridiculously happy moment, we've laughed, grown, crossed oceans, lost a few games of patience, and built a love that finally feels like home. Now we're ready to write the next chapter: forever. And we'd love for you to be there when we do.
